What's the cost of female exclusion?; AMA session with Marija Butkovic, founder and CEO of WoW; Oura launches its Generation 3 ring; Reproductive Health Innovation Summit
Biweekly newsletter about the latest news and updates on innovation and diversity in wearable tech, health tech, and IoT space.
Happy Monday everyone! đ
Across the world, millions of people are still unable to access the internet and participate online â and women are disproportionately excluded. Men are 21% more likely to be online than women globally, rising to 52% in Least Developed Countries.
Various barriers prevent women and girls from accessing the internet and participating online, including unaffordable devices and data tariffs, inequalities in education and digital skills, social norms that discourage women and girls from being online, and fears around privacy, safety, and security.
A recent âCosts of Exclusionâ report from the World Wide Web Foundation estimates the economic impact of womenâs digital exclusion and underlines the economic opportunity governments have to include women in a fully inclusive digital economy.
A digital economy without the full participation of women cannot reach its full potential. Digital inclusion is not only good policy â itâs good economics.
To see the full findings and detailed policy recommendations, read the global report.
Thank you for tuning in this Tuesday, happy reading! Marija & Anja đ

âĄïž WoW member highlight âĄïž
We are super excited to have Oura joining our community as a WoW member. đ„°
Last week Oura announced the launch of its Generation 3 ring which prioritizes sleep before any other wearable on the market, using the pulse signal from your finger which yields the most accurate reading - much stronger than the wrist.
In March 2020 Oura was the first wearable to be deployed in critical COVID-19 research. Through the UCSF TemPredict study they donated rings to frontline healthcare workers who were likely to be affected by the COVID-19 virus. They also invited the Oura community to join the TemPredict study, which resulted in more than 65,000 Oura Ring users voluntarily sharing their data with the scientific community, contributing to a growing body of research on illness detection, symptom profiles, and recovery. They also launched our Health Risk Management (HRM) platform to help organizations optimize performance and monitor usersâ wellness, and rolled out a Rest Mode feature to focus on recovery.Â
Around 40% of Oura users are women.
The new Period Prediction feature, offered in the Oura Ring Generation 3, accurately predicts your next period 30 days in advance and alerts you 6 days before it starts, so youâre always prepared. Instead of relying solely on the calendar method, Oura takes a more holistic approach to predicting your period as your body temperature naturally changes throughout your menstrual cycle.
Welcome to the WoW community, Oura! đ
